For me, it’s a furnace I use to make the materials I use in my PhD. I need to heat them to temperatures above 1000 °C to make them, which is why I use it.

The reason it’s my favourite is because the inside of the furnace is so hot it glows really bright, so it looks really cool when you open it up in a dark room. There’s a picture of it on my profile page under the “My Typical Day” section if you’re interested to see what it looks like!

In comp chem I don’t really use lab equipment but we have a powerful computer whose name is storm, which everyone in the group can access from their own computers to make it do the in-depth calculations we need for our simulations. It’s super important for everyone in the group – we wouldn’t be able to do most of our science without it.

I’ve used many different types of equipment – from screwdrivers up to complicated laboratory equipment such as Infra-red analysers, mass spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance imagining machines.

My favourite bit of equipment is the Burette.
